| Many attempts have been
made to produce synthetic opal and opal
simulants.
These categories are
defined here as: |
| Synthetic
Opal |
| a
man-made opal which has the same chemical
composition, physical structure and
properties of natural opal. |

Opal Simulant
|
| a
man made material which attempts to
duplicate the appearance of opal,
but may be made from materials other
than silica, and has different physical
structures and/or properties to the
natural stone. |
